Back in February, the City Council of Tyler, Texas voted to adopt a new Smoking Ordinance that stops people from smoking in public places including restaurants, pool halls, bowling alleys, VFW halls & bars. The new ordinance is intended to protect the public from the health risks associated with secondhand smoke. Under the ordinance, smoking is not permitted within 20 feet of any door, operational window or ventilation system. Businesses must remove all ashtrays from inside their establishment. They must also post "no smoking" signs at each entrance. The ordinance goes into effect midnight on Sunday, June 1, 2008.
The new ordinance was met with some hostility from local bar owners and hotel managers, who say the ordinance will almost certainly affect their businesses. City Council members have defended their decision, saying their concern for the health of everyone.
If the rules are broken, there are consequences. If someone is caught violating the ordinance, the first offense is punishable by a fine of up to $300 and the second offense could cost up to $500. The new ordinance is now in effect, by the way. There are alot of mixed emotions on this subject. Enjoy your "clean" air, Tylerites.
